Cheers To Finger Power

Mind you, this is not a Green concept and neither does it claim to be Eco Friendly. Its just a helpful solution for a tricky situation. The situation being: you running out of juice on your mobile phone. So what do you do? Remove the battery from the back of the phone; give it a few good turns around your index finger and its gathered enough power to last you a conversation or a safe trip to your charger and electric point.

Tricked Out Appliances for Those On Wheels

These are some tripped out appliances. This product set right here is called “Spot.” It’s full title is “Spot – Appliance Design for All.” Why? Because it’s designed for people who’re confined to wheelchairs or (I’d imagine) just short in stature. Three appliances, a fridge, a dishwasher, and an oven, for the supreme ease of use for all. (Post preview for everyone: I vote fridge for winner, how about you?)

On the oven there’s of course a touchscreen digital interface as well as motorized elevator rails for ease of access. The stove in any average home is fairly low anyway, so this one might not look that different, but the slightly lower stature and that elevator exhaust will really make all the difference in the long run.

On the dishwasher there’s once again digital controls with a touch screen, easy-access dish rack on top, and a fold over cover. Same deal as the oven in that it appears pretty much the same as a conventional oven, but the slight modifications make the difference.

The refrigerator has a heck of a lot of unconventional differences from your average fridge, somuchso that I’d friggin love to own one fer sure. Sliding trays and bins, an electr-magnetic door latch system (intense!), and LED night lights activated by a person sneaking around for a midnight snack. Touchscreen digital interface (didn’t see that one comin, did ya?!) Music player (wait, what?) with USB port for plugging in your USB keys and unloading a bunch of music for storage and play. Holy crap biggest MP3 player EVER! And of course a control panel choc-full of options like time, date, temp, music control, LED control, security lock (for those electro-magnets), and other general preferences.

Holy god’s own refrigerator, Batman!

Lean, mean and sometimes even green, concept motorcycles often make us want to head out on the highway and look for adventure. These bikes may not be quite ready to tear up the road as we zoom into the wind, but we wish they would move from concept to reality very soon! As we take a look at concept motorcycles, here are 20 of the most bad-ass bikes to hope for in 2010.

Romain Herment has a motorcycle concept that uses nuclear energy as a power source. He calls it Motorbike 2050 version 2. This futuristic bike uses two inexhaustible natural elements, deuterium and tritium, allowing a sustainable ride in the days to come. The motorbike consumes 1 liter of water for a 100 km drive.

The Aitu seems to be rough and rowdy, ready for Mad Max to take it for a spin. Designer Renato Gschwend is hoping to attract adventurous souls who want to make heads turn if this bike ever hits the street. It features a powerful V-twin 1800cc engine and non-silent exhausts to ensure you’re heard roaring down the highway.

Three designers Bernhard Ranner, Anders August Kittilsen and Rudolf Stefanich, worked to make ZEVS, “The first electric motorcycle for the “real biker.” It’s designed for “real men” and dusty roads, in the spirit of Harley Davidson, Custom Chopper culture and the good old Route 66 romance.

Designed by Julian Silva, this concept motorcycle is covered in carbon fiber for a fast and light ride. The framework is made of aluminum and wrapped with carbon fiber panels that store the mechanical systems. Designer Pierre Yohanes Lubis thinks if you would like a very fast, very dangerous, very tiny motorcycle, then the Halbo might be for you. If it gets beyond concept and hits the main highway, let’s just hope you don’t hit the pavement too because it could be much worse than road rash. However, it does have a BMW stamp on it and is electric powered.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Classroom

Have you seen, heard of, or otherwise experienced the “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy?” Well this is basically it embodied in a fantastic school-desk body. Dubbed “Mesa – Classroom of 2015″ by its designer Phelan Miller, this concept is one our children will be wondering how we ever did without. Oh my goodness mother, you didn’t have the internet when you were a kid in school? How did you learn about things?

Oh my goodness mother, you didn’t have Mesa desks when you were a kid in school?

How did you learn how to spell?

Middle schoolers the world over will be tapping their way to intelligence when these fantastic items come into play. The Mesa desk comes standard with grammar check, spell check, dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus, and a section for math. Employed by an effective and simple touch screen with tab system, including “freewrite” ability for improving handwriting.

It even interacts with real paper, scanning it and checking it for error in a moment’s time.

Mesa desks are double wide, made for two students at a time. Tall enough to be stood by, short enough to still be realistically accessed by a person sitting in a chair.

Light and stackable.

MILLER if you make these in a way that allows schools to attain them inexpensively, I don’t see why you won’t have created an overnight sensation, changing the way the world teaches and learns.

Heavy Hitters: Earth’s Most Amazing Meteor Craters

The aliens have landed, time and time again since the world began. Not the “little green men” of science fiction, but rocky leftovers from the birth of the solar system: meteors and asteroids. While most of the craters thatserve as records of their impacts have been eroded away over the vast expanse of geological time, many so-called astroblemes remain. Here are 10 of the most noteworthy.

Meteor Crater, Arizona, USA

Located about 40 miles east of Flagstaff, the 4,000 ft wide and almost 600 ft deep Meteor Crater owes its startlingly lunar aspect to both a relatively young age (about 40,000 years) and the arid climate of the northern Arizona desert in which it is situated. It’s estimated that the mainly nickel-iron Canyon Diablo Meteorite was about about 55 yards (50 meters) in diameter and weighed approximately 150,000 tons.

Meteor Crater is, perhaps surprisingly, privately owned and has remained the property of the Barringer family since 1903. Tourists are charged a $15 entrance fee by Meteor Crater Enterprises and a visitor’s center on the crater rim offers multimedia presentations and a chance to handle meteoric iron fragments found in the area.

Here’s a video of a trip via air to Meteor Crater. Flying INTO the crater is not recommended – in 1964 a small Cessna airplane flew into the crater and found itself unable to exit due to persistent downdrafts – it eventually crashed on the crater floor:

Like Meteor Crater in Arizona, Wolfe Creek crater owes its well-preserved state to both age (around 300,000 years) and the environment of the Australian Outback. Approaching the crater on land, visitors must first climb over the 80 ft (25 meter) high rim before descending to the sand-covered crater floor 165 ft (50 meters) below the rim.

The brain is a complex organ responsible for controlling, monitoring and regulating many functions and actions. While much is understood about the brain, many questions still remain, with animal brains sometimes serving as a forum to explore various mysteries. From tiny insects detailing the importance of brain size to genetically-altered mice helping researchers better understand Alzheimer’s disease to sea lions examining the relationship between toxic exposure and brain damage, these and other animals have recently provided some compelling insights on the inner workings of the brain.

Does Brain Size Matter? Not for Some Tiny Insects

The age-old question of whether bigger brains are necessarily better has been recently explored in studies of tiny insect brains that demonstrated impressive abilities to perform complex tasks. Despite having brains that were only the size of pinheads, some insects were able to count, categorize objects and even recognize human faces, causing some researchers to propose that complex communication between brain cells, rather than brain size, is more important. Since it is easier to study such cell communication in smaller brains rather than larger brains, scientists are excited about what future research on insect brains may suggest about cell communication and understanding more about the human brain.

Not Your Average Street Rat: Hobbie-J, the Super Smart Rat

(Images via: Tech Ynet, Medill, Sunday Mercury Blogs)

Speaking of brain cell communication, researchers have created the world’s smartest rat by altering a single gene during the embryonic stage. Named Hobbie-J, this rat can retain memory three times longer than other rats and easily perform complex tasks like moving through mazes with few clues. The reason? Scientists injected Hobbie-J with a chemical that caused an overexpression of the NR2B gene, which helps control brain cell communication. With her brain cells able to communicate just a second longer, Hobbie-J has shown herself to be quite smarter than ordinary rats. According to researchers, targeting NR2B may help resolve brain disorders like dementia and Alzheimer’s, although there are some important considerations to keep in mind. Since embryonic modification is a very controversial topic, scientists would have to create a drug that targeted NR2B. Also, having the ability to retain so many memories could be detrimental to superbly smart people, with the possibility that they could struggle to forget bad memories and move forward with their lives.
