Cheers To Finger Power

Mind you, this is not a Green concept and neither does it claim to be Eco Friendly. Its just a helpful solution for a tricky situation. The situation being: you running out of juice on your mobile phone. So what do you do? Remove the battery from the back of the phone; give it a few good turns around your index finger and its gathered enough power to last you a conversation or a safe trip to your charger and electric point.

With the advancement of technology, digital world is opening up new paths every other day starting from micro and mini chips to smallest integrated circuits. With the decreasing size of the circuits, the devices are also taking their tiniest possible shapes every other day. Similar is the case with the Marvell Plug Computer 3.0, I guess.

The Marvells latest Plug Computer 3.0 is probably one of the tiniest PC you have ever seen. This tiny PC is featured with an in-built 1.8-inch hard disk drive of unspecified capacity, a faster CPU, an integrated Bluetooth, WiFi and also an USB port. The device can be easily connected to an external hard drive or a printer too. And the biggest thing in this tiny device is that it uses only one tenth of the power as compared to a regular PC, which is no doubt a great feature.

The Bio Alternative

As an alternative to the present variety in mobile phone batteries, Bio battery sounds like a plausible solution. It feeds off carbohydrates (sugar) and utilizes enzymes as the catalyst to generate electricity. With the promise of lasting three to four times longer on a single charge than conventional lithium batteries, investing in a can of coke (Sometimes Alcohol!) every now and then doesnt seem to be a bad proposition. Add to this, water and oxygen as residue when the battery dies, makes the concept sweeter!

Best of Yanko Design 2009

The year 2009 can be marked as one of the most defining years for Yanko Design and its community. The year can be re-capped with the Best of 2009, but on the same note its important to iterate our accomplishments. When the world was facing its worst global recession in decades, (including the design industry as a whole), YD on its part grew its outlook by innovating to stay ahead of the game. For a moment you can actually say that Innovation has been the theme symbolic to YD and this year’s best designs!

I am equally proud of every member in the YD family. The team took initiatives and spearheaded projects that added value in every sense of the word. The Job Board has proven to be more effective in landing positions v/s recruitment and agencies. The YD Store made business sense to us but it made a stronger statement for the individual designers. It gave them freedom to focus on creativity, while YD Store took care of bringing those products to the design advocates. The equation is perfect; the designers get to do what theyre passionate about, while YD realizes their inspirations.

With our readers ranging from the creative industry (industrial, graphics design, interior, fashion design, ect) to the traditional industry (info tech, finance, entertainment, marketing, manufacturing, ect), we can proudly say that we have one of the most vocal communities where voices are heard. The innovations that you see on YD are all a result of those suggestions. This includes the interviews, reviews & Podcasts .

To sum it up, weve had a pretty innovative year, and we hope next year will be bigger, better and brighter for all of us!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

We spend at least one-third of our lives in our bedrooms and bathrooms, yet the design of these essential domestic spaces is nearly always an afterthought. But smart, sleek design can transform an otherwise bland room into a relaxing space that packs in as many features as possible without visual clutter. Instant lofts, bedroom tree houses and bathrooms that unfold like origami to reveal their components are just a few of the 12 beautiful bathroom and bedroom design and décor ideas that follow.

Hanging Bedroom in a Box

Those living in small spaces have to be creative about dividing up the space, but putting up screens only gets you so far. This ingenious solution is an entire loft bedroom that securely hangs from the ceiling, providing a sleeping space that makes use of high ceilings. Positioned as it is within this particular room, the loft still leaves enough room for adults to stand up beneath it, but is low enough to easily walk into from the elevated portion of the space. The back surface of the loft could even be used as a movie screen.

High-Tech Futuristic Bathroom Design

At first glance, this bathroom appears to be incredibly simplea ceiling-mounted showerhead and a slatted wooden floor in a large, empty room. But theres much more to this elegant, minimalist space than meets the eye. The floor opens up to reveal what lies literally just beneath the surfacea set of benches on either side of a luxurious tub.

All up in Copenhagen. This is a bike system design for the city! An open, “floating” system that allows the people using the bike system to ride a bike, park a bike, do what they came to do, whip out their map, find the closest bike, and ride that bike to their next location. This is the OPENbike system. Fully adjustable, full system in place to place the bikes where they’re needed.

Designed to make tourists of Copenhagen feel as welcome to the bike system in the city as those biking every day! Small wheels, high volume tires for durability, same for the robust frame. Instant adjustability with single-button seat and handlebars. Cable routings, electronics, and wirings inside frame for weather protection. Modern belt drive system. Strong, easily recyclable and replaceable parts.

Low center of gravity, low step-over hight for new and experienced users.

Cargo add-ons for large luggage or extra riders.

RFID reader for access, GSM/GPRS-module for positioning, communication with central system.

LED-lights with light-sensitive sensors that turn on if it’s dark and the bike is in motion. Pedal reflectors, on-board power for electronics.
